Kraftmas Day 7 - Christmas Candles

Decorative candles are a great accent to any room no matter the time of year. Whether they are a part of a centerpiece or standing alone, they add color and personality to the decor especially when you decorate them yourself! Perhaps of all of the holidays out there, candles seem to be the most popular for  holiday decor around Christmas. Think of all those Yankee Candle holiday scents - evergreen, christmas cookie, etc.

There are a ton of ways to decorate candles - paint, scrapbook paper, ribbon, yarn, glitter. One way that I have been decorating candles around my house is using scrapbook paper and modge podge, so you can use holiday scrapbook paper if you like. However, I decided to draw my own design with water color pencils!

What you need:
Pillar candles - mine are white and unscented
Drawing paper
Medium of choice - I use watercolor pencils
Modge podge
Scented tea light candles

First, you need to prepare your candles. We will be using modge podge to apply your picture to the pillar candles, and modge podge is flammable so you should not be burning the candles that you decorate. Don't worry! I have a way to make it so you can still burn your Yankee Candle holiday scents. Here is how:

1. Light the pillar candle that you will be decorating and allow it to burn long enough that there is roughly 1/2inch valley in the wax around the wick.

2. Blow out the candle and pour the hot wax out of the candle into a trash can (or you can use the wax to build your own candle...more coming soon!)

3. Cut the wick down.

4. To decorate your candle, you can use any decorative scrapbook paper or you can use white sketchbook paper to draw your own design like I've done below. Just measure your paper and modge podge it on using one coat to apply the paper and then a second over top.

5.After you decorate your candle, place a scented tea light candle into the valley you have created in your pillar candle and light!
